The village of Bogorodskoye 25 miles from Sergiev Posad has been carving its distinctive unpainted linden-wood toys with hidden pull-string cam mechanisms since the 1700s. The classic 'bears striking an anvil' is instantly recognisable worldwide. The craft was almost lost twice — during the Revolution and during the Soviet decline — but the local carving school continues to train new masters.
