For 200 years the small town of Channapatna near Bengaluru has been India's most famous toy-making cluster. The craft was reportedly encouraged by Tipu Sultan, who brought Persian artisans to train local turners. Today around 250 workshop-units employ some 6,000 artisans, turning ivory-wood and rubber-wood into rounded dolls, rattles, animals and educational shapes, finished with natural vegetable-dye lac. Channapatna received Geographical Indication (GI) status in 2005. The pieces are non-toxic, distinctive, and now stocked worldwide.
