The Erzgebirge highland region straddling the Saxon-Czech border has been Central Europe's wooden-toy heartland since the 17th century, when local silver miners turned to woodwork in winter. The village of Seiffen is the most famous producer, still making nutcrackers, smoking-figures (Räuchermann), Christmas pyramids, and the classic turned-and-painted figures using techniques passed through 8-10 generations. Erzgebirge folk art (Volkskunst) is a protected regional craft designation.
