Kokeshi villages

Japan · Tōhoku region — a living craft district.

The traditional kokeshi doll comes from 11 distinct lineages in Japan's northern hot-spring towns — Naruko, Tsuchiyu, Yajiro, Zaō, Sakunami, Tōgatta, Yamagata, Kijiyama, Nanbu, Tsugaru, and Hijiori. Each lineage has its own body shape, facial-line convention, and hair pattern, kept by named makers whose apprenticeships run 7-10 years. The dolls have been made since the early 1800s originally as souvenirs for hot-spring visitors.
