The village of Kondapalli near Vijayawada has been making its distinctive soft-wood painted figures for around 400 years. The craft — carried out mostly by the Aryakshatriya community — carves scenes of village life, mythology, and processions from light Tella Poniki wood. Kondapalli figures got GI protection in 2007. The largest annual output is the Dasavatharam (ten Vishnu incarnation) set, still made in about 100 family workshops.
