Nirmal in North Telangana has produced its distinctive light papier-mâché toys and paintings for around 400 years. The craft uses tamarind-seed paste and jute over a wooden armature, painted with gold background and mineral colours drawn from the Mughal miniature tradition. The Nirmal Toys and Arts Industrial Cooperative Society continues to organise the artisan community. Nirmal received GI status in 2009.
