Nuremberg has been Europe's most important toy-trading city since medieval times — home of the world's oldest toy fair (Spielwarenmesse, since 1949, but built on centuries of trade). The surrounding Bavarian region contains Steiff (Giengen — the traditional teddy bear since 1902), Playmobil (Zirndorf, since 1974), Käthe Kruse dolls (formerly Bad Kösen), and older wooden-toy villages.
