The valley villages around Oaxaca — Arrazola, San Martín Tilcajete, La Unión — are the world capital of alebrijes: brightly-painted fantastical animal carvings invented in the 1930s by Mexico City papier-mâché artist Pedro Linares and adapted to copal-wood carving by Oaxacan makers Manuel Jiménez and Jacobo Ángeles. Every piece is one-of-a-kind, painted with elaborate patterns often inspired by Zapotec textile motifs.
