Sergiev Posad, 70km northeast of Moscow, is where the first matryoshka (nesting doll) was made in 1890 by Vasily Zvyozdochkin and painted by Sergei Malyutin. The town remains one of Russia's toy-manufacturing centres and is home to the Russian Toy Museum. Traditional matryoshka painting has multiple regional styles — Sergiev Posad's is the classic red-and-yellow floral.
