Go (Weiqi)

The game and its history — explore its living tradition country by country.

Invented in China more than 2,500 years ago, Go is the world's oldest continuously played strategy game. Traditional boards are made from a single slab of kaya wood (or now, Hyuga kaya from Japan — 500+ year old trees). Stones are shell (white) and slate (black). Japan, Korea and China all have living professional Go traditions. The Japanese towns of Miyazaki and Mie are the traditional centres of go-stone and go-board making.
