The kite is over 2,000 years old — the earliest were Chinese silk-and-bamboo. Regional kite festivals continue: India's Uttarayan/Makar Sankranti (14 January) fills the Gujarat sky with fighter kites; Pakistan's Basant does the same in Punjab (though restricted); Guatemala's Sumpango launches 20-metre paper kites on All Saints Day; Japan's Hamamatsu holds annual kite battles. Fighter kites, box kites, dragon kites, and ceremonial giants are all still made by named craftsmen.
