Ludo is the simplified British colonial version of India's ancient Pachisi — a game the Mughal emperor Akbar reportedly played on a life-sized courtyard board at Fatehpur Sikri with dancing girls as the pieces. The full four-player Indian Pachisi (Chaupar) uses cowrie shells for dice and a cross-shaped cloth board. Pachisi cloth boards are still hand-embroidered in Rajasthan and Gujarat. Every Indian childhood includes both Ludo and its ancestor.
