The mancala family is the great pit-and-seed game of the tropical Old World — probably the most widely played traditional board game in human history. Ayo in Nigeria, Oware in Ghana, Bao on the Swahili coast, Sungka in the Philippines, Congklak in Indonesia, Olinda keliya in Sri Lanka. Every version has slightly different rules but the same basic movement of seeds around holes. Traditional boards are carved from single blocks of wood.
